Why Do Men Wear Earrings?
If asked why men wear earrings, the most common answers would be trend and tradition. Despite the fact that wearing earrings may work against men in many situations, like work or in an interview, it does not stop them from wearing it.
As far as I know
- Many celebrities wear earrings, and fans like to follow them. Tyson Beckford bought expensive diamond studs for his girlfriend, then ended up wearing it for himself instead of returning to the jeweler when he found that she had been unfaithful.
- Indian men have worn earrings through the ages. It may also be noted that Hindu gods are depicted with their danglers. It's part of Indian culture.
- There are several references in the Bible also concerning earrings. Many Kings in India are known to wear them.
- It is believed that men have worn earrings for as long as civilization has existed. Jade earrings of men dating back to 3000 BC have been found in Southeast Asia. In ancient times, men wore earrings in places like Assyria and Babylonia to denote their rank in society. Aztec warriors wore them as a mark of honor.
- Even the primitive man pierced himself to wear earrings. Then, they were not only mere adornments that spoke of power, but prized possessions as well.
- It is also believed that even slaves have worn earrings or bracelet as a symbol of slavery.
Why do guys wear earrings? Given below is a list of top 10 reasons why Men get their ears pierced.
Top 10 Reasons Why Men Wear Earrings
I was looking for the possible reasons males wear earrings and found many questions related to the topic. Here are some of them.
- Why do guys wear in both ears ?
- Should men wear ear accessories?
- On which side do straight guys wear earrings?
- Does the Bible teach that it is acceptable for men to wear it?
- What does the Bible say about Men wearing earrings?
- What does It mean when a Man wears in both Ears?
- Is the trend of men wearing earrings over?
- How old is too old for wear ear studs?
- What Men are really saying when they wear it?
- What does God say about such males?
- Is there anything wrong with a man wearing it?
Given below are ten reasons why Men may choose to wear earrings.
- They're trendy. Many men wear rings as a fashion trend. Many young men wear ear studs or hoops as a style statement because they want to or find it attractive or stylish or to enhance their looks.
- As a custom or tradition. Others wear it as a custom or tradition followed in their religion. The practice of piercing ears is one of the Hindu practices performed in the third or fifth year for some children. This ceremony is celebrated by inviting people and feasting.
- As a status symbol. Some wear diamond studs or golden earrings as a way to display their wealth, or even keep them as a safe investment they can bank on during hard times.
- To play a role. There are many actors who pierce their ears so that they can fit into the character they are playing.
- To attract females. Some guys pierce their ears because they think that girls find guys with earrings sexy.
- It was a gift. Many times, the man may have gotten his ear stud as a gift from a girlfriend, wife, or a friend. So he may have pierced his ear or ears so that he could wear it.
- Marking your sexuality or style. Wearing earrings in one ear (on the right lobe) is often considered as a mark of homosexuality. But this could also just be a misconception, as there are also criminals using earrings to misguide people. Some parents also think that wearing an earring means that person is becoming a hippie.
- Physical therapy. Many wear earrings because of the therapeutic significance. It is believed that the point of vision in acupuncture is situated in the center of the lobe. Hence, the practice of wearing earrings is thought to have some therapeutic value.
- For one's spirituality. It is believed that long ear lobes like Buddha are a sign of spiritual development and superior status. Young yogis even now follow the practice of stretching the piercing to stimulate the psychic nerves connected to the ears.
- To rebel. Finally, many men also do it rebel or stand out in the crowd. People like to do things that they are specifically instructed not to do. Many also tend to think that wearing it would separate themselves from the masses — to be an individualist. (Thanks John for this point!)
Having said the above, I strongly believe that every individual has the right to choose what he/she should wear or not wear.
Guys, do you wear earrings? What's your reason? Ladies, what do you think of men wearing earrings?
How to Care for Sensitive Pierced Ears?
Tyrone Kracht on April 22, 2019:
My ears are not pierced but I have friends and a male cousin who do. Not to be critical but those men over the age of fifty earrings look ridiculous on you. The reason is older men tend to choose the really small earrings and since your ears are becoming deformed with age already it looks like you stuck a small nail through your lobe.
J T Brock from Cambridge Ontario on June 03, 2015:
i got my left ear pierced back in 1986 when I was 21 and it was mostly due to rebellion. my father thought I was crazy and maybe I was but I wanted to show my independence from him. I wore a silver stud for a while then switched to a small gold hoop. i wore it for a few years and frankly got bored with it (my father passed away 3 months after getting the earring). over the years I felt like wearing it again and have done so. when I was 40 (10 years ago) I wanted to get my right ear pierced to match my left but my wife was against the idea,(I had gone as far as piercing it and wearing small fake diamond studs in both ears) so I took them out and haven't worn any since then. Now I just turned 50 last month and got the old urge to wear an earring again and put the stud back in my left ear about a week ago. my wife wasn't thrilled but has refrained from commenting.
I guess my reasons for wanting an earring are my desire to show confidence and show a little style. I don't think generally earrings are feminine but I do think there are feminine type earrings and masculine type earrings.
I am constantly amazed at the wide range of comments. some people sure have some strong opinions about guys wearing earrings. most guys who wear earrings don't really care about the negative comments, I find. Everyone should be free to choose what they want to wear. I happen to think guys wearing earrings are cool. but that's my opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion. but it bothers me that the harsh vile comments are meant to hurt and attack others. if you don't like it when guys wear earrings that's fine, but that's your opinion and nasty hateful comments don't help anyone in the long run.

I am now 60 and just got my ear pierced after thinking about it on and off for some time. My wife and son were a bit shocked at first but not made any adverse comments. Some people say it does not suit me but others think it looks 'cool'. I like it and that's what really matters at the end of the day.
GoldenClays on February 16, 2015:
I wear an earring because it's an expression of my own independent nature. I am 60 years old. Used to wear one when I was in a band, some years back. I recently decided to do it again. Why? Because I am at a point in my life, where I don't have to care about having to conform to any rigid social rules in groups I run around with. I want to be myself, and more importantly. Life is just too short to sweat the small stuff. My philosophy: If the shoe fits - WEAR IT. Besides, I think it looks pretty cool. Especially when I am on my bike.
tar707 on August 30, 2014:
To all those men who get piercings simply to "rebel against society", and "be different", how petty is that. Unfortunately many men have piercings too, so you are merely conforming to a common lifestyle choice. You want to stand out in the crowd? Ride around in a bloody penny-farthing singing the theme-tune to StarWars dressed like a Tibetan monk; I'm sure you would be the centre of everyone's attention.

Hi Anamika, this is an interesting article, I wanted to have my ears piereced ever since I was at primary school but did not get them pierced until well into adulthood! I usually wear a hoop and stud I my left ear and a stud in my right ear. It is nothing to do with gender or sexuality. I have a professional job and have never had any negative comments. There is a lot of prejudice against men wearing earrings but I don't bother to take any notice. In fact I feel uncomfortable without them.

When I see a man with an earring, I see someone who seems wounded or has to prove himself. I see a conformist. I see someone who is insecure and has to follow the pack. I don't see a leader. The funny thing is that many people try to get tattooed and pierced to be 'different' but in reality they are just following the crowd that gets tattooed and pierced. The human body is perfect and beautiful the way it is.

A very interesting read. I tried wearing one earring (stud) in my left ear about 10 years ago. Due to infection I had to remove it. Since that time I have often thought about trying again. Why? I don't really know. It's just that I think it would look 'stylish'. I am 50 years of age. I am not insecure or trying to show off. My young adult children think it would look stupied and are actively trying to discourage me. In essence, I think that is my real dilemma: I would like to try wearing an earring again, but I am concerned what others would truly think of me. In many ways, the earring is just like another piece of jewellery. I wear a nice watch, not just to tell the time, but also to 'look good' on my wrist. I wear a three-piece gold ring which my wife bought for me as a 20th wedding anniversary present. Many people have commented how much they like it. I don't need to wear the ring, I do so because I like to wear it. So in many ways, the earring would be in the same category. However, I am conscious of the opinion of other people in regard to the earring. Thanks to those who have contributed to this discussion.
Levertis Steele from Southern Clime on January 27, 2012:
Society has always tried to be careful about what apparrels define males and females. The more rules it lays down, the more people, young ones especially, will rebel. People fight to be themselves, to be free to make their own choices.
If we compare the clothing and apparrels of different cultures, we will probably find in each something that the sexes in others would not wear because they look like they belong to the opposite sex. Consider the kilts (skirts) worn by some men of Holland. Consider the loin cloths worn by some men in very warm jungle climates. Consider the habits worn by Geisha girls. Consider the wigs worn by the men at the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Consider the topless women of some African cultures. All of a sudden, the earings seem very small.

I am a 29 year old male who wears two earrings in each ear. I am a Petroleum Engineer, quite successful, educated, social, normal and definitely not insecure. I'm 6'3" 220lbs and stand out regardless of whether or not I wear earrings. A lot of these comments seem to be from close minded, judgmental and self righteous people. I have worn my earrings to interviews, meetings, etc. etc. I basically always wear them, and I have never had any negative feedback, and I think out of every position I've applied for I've only been turned down once. To the person high above who said they don't hire people with ponytails or earrings, you are a representation of everything that is wrong in the world. You are a person that judges people based on what is on the outside verses what is on the inside, shame on you. I look forward to the day when the close minded 'holier than thou' group of people in our workforce move into retirement, so that the young, bright and introspective leaders can run this world. Every time we take a few steps forward in acceptance, there is someone from past generations that tries to pull us back. To those of you so quick to judge a man with earrings based on biblical principles, does the Bible not tell you not to judge lest you be judged? It's funny how the 'righteous' seem to skip over certain scriptures. To those of you who say certain men wear earrings for attention...well I'm sure if I put on a Burberry polo shirt, or a nice pair of cufflinks, or alligator shoes, or a $500 silk necktie, I will draw a lot more attention that a man with some studs in his ears. People are people, there are a lot of men in prison that committed heinous crimes sporting conventional hair cuts and no earrings, just as there are professionals and business men who are very successful with long hair and earrings. Learn to judge people based on the content of their character and not their outward appearance.

One of the greatest evils of this world are those who would deny the free will of others. Trying to control other people's actions needlessly is both cruel and unethical. Keep your so-called "morality" to yourself.
As for me, I'm a male who wears earrings in both ears - I like symmetry. I have over 100 pairs of earrings - far more than my wife of 28 years! A few studs, most of them are dangles - some are pretty outrageous! Why not? Being over 50 years old, I'll be damned if I'll let others make my decisions for me...

Just read through the comments here -- what strange ideas people have.
When men first started wearing earrings in each ear, I tried it out, liked it and have worn them ever since. The same with my hairstyle and three day beard -- I tried it out, liked it and kept it.
Sometimes I wear a nose stud, too. I like anything that enhances my looks, and I've got the freedom to wear whatever I like. I guess that's lacking in some of the people who have commented here.

I got both of my ears pierced 3 weeks ago just because I wanted to and I can't wait to put in my diamond studs that I bought in a couple weeks. I don't know what they'll look like on me yet but both my girlfriend and I like how my current ones look on me and she thinks it's sexy. I've gotten negative reactions to them like some of the people above said but I'm my own person and I'll do what I want? Who's to say wearing one or two earrings means you are gay? No part of me is homosexual and the people criticizing me know this too do why judge me? Men have worn earrings centuries before you critics who think you know all about life. Being yourself means doing what you like because you like it, not or other people. I don't wear them to try and get people to stare at me or give me comments on them. I like how I look with them on when I look at myself in the mirror and I feel confident enough to brush of the negative comments I may get. Some of you are so narrow minded you don't even look at yourself or understand how something like this could be considered biased. Do what u want to yourself and don't judge others for being themselves.

I'm an 18 year old male and I got my left ear pierced about a year ago for the ren fest. I loved it. I got compliments on it. But I myself wanted to stand out more. And right around the time I started dating my current girlfriend I began to gauge my ear. I am now at a half inch. I still get compliments. She thinks its sexy. There is nothing wrong with peircings or gauges. They have both been around for thousands of years.honestly now For me it acts as more of a symbol the anything. I as a person changed a lot since I've gotten it. I've made changes for the better. And it reminds me of these changes but also reminds me of my girlfriend and the love I have for her. It acst as a symbol of my happiness, perseverance, strength and love. Before you go and judge anyone about something like this look at it this way. Say your favorite thing to wear was a purple shirt and a black baseball cap. Then all the sudden there are 10.000 crimes with people who wear a purple shirt and a black baseball cap. Does that make you a bad person?. NO. Its all about the stereotypes. so think twice before you judge. No man /woman is better then the next. And no Human is perfect.

I think everyone that has posted negative comments towards guys with pierced ears should take a cold hard look at themselves in the mirrior! And i'm sure you will find nothing but hate in yourself, the only reason you are so negative towards guys with pierced ears is because they themselves feel confident enough to be okay with themselves and express themselves that they are okay with who they are, and they can do this any way they feel, being a bold fashion statement, or even getting pierced ears. You people are just disgusted because you aren't okay with who you are, you are upset by your bottled up feelings, and only with to reflect it upon people who are okay with themselves enough to do something that isn't like the "old ways" where guys were looked at bad for having a pierced ear! You shouldn't me happy with yourself for bringing people down by telling them they shouldn't pierce there ears! Get over yourself it's a new generation! And we are in fact taking control, weather the old farts like it or not! I'm also proud to say i'm an 18 year old male who just got his ears pierced! And enjoy it! I feel comftorble, confident, and proud to be the person i am. And if you aren't don't comment on this topic we don't want your negative talk on here!

I am a 55yo married guy who has a pierced ear. Wear a small stud and sometimes a small silver hoop or a bit larger gold hoop...when I wear them.
In fact I have not actually put any of them in for about nine months or so. It is not that I no longer care for them, it just is not part of my morning routine lately.
BTW: My wife bought all my earrings for me and loves the look, so maybe I better pull them out of the drawer and plug one of them into the ear.
My wife is the one who pierced my ear for me using an ice cube and a sterile needle. Did not hurt a bit. Good thing she wasn't mad at me at the time or she might have used a rusty nail.

Hi Anamika S,
I think that you left out one reason why us guys get our ears pierced and that reason is just because we wanted to. I have both my ears pierced and the only reason why I did it was just because I wanted to. The fact that I wanted to have both my ears pierced did not have any sort of underlying, profound meaning behind it nor was it a statement of my sexual preference or claiming of any sort of group. I tend to think of myself as a pretty simple sort of creature. I am straight forward, honest, and usually if it makes me happy and I can afford it, I will usually do it. I think your list of reasons why guys decide to get their ear(s) pierced is pretty good and does cover a lot of the reasons why we do it.

Lon...Really? How do you know that Jesus was totally secure? So you are comparing people living in this day & age with Jesus Christ. Well, we are made in his likeness, but as human beings we are unfortunately plagued with insecurity, which makes us normal. Pierced ears started somewhere centuries ago, probably with ancient kings or warriors. Even as described by a few posters that sailors believed wearing an earring would prevent them from drowning. As the years pass I believe that tradition, as most, are tampered with, changed and adjusted and now today it's usually a fashion statement, a tradition/religion of some sort.
What kind of person says, 'when i see a person pierced I think they have other problems?'....i'm guessing a person with a great deal of issues themelves.

I'm a 53 year old health care professional. Had one ear pierced in 1976. Took it out many times due to feeling the negative reactions similar to some of the negative posters. After suffering an almost "Sudden Death" due to heart attack, I decided life was too short to worry about negative people. I recently re-pierced both ears. I did not do it because I am insecure and need attention, I did it for the opposite reason. I am secure in myself and it is my choice...my life. Some complaints sound like the same turn-of-the-century arguments against women wearing pants.

Jack on September 28, 2010:
For a man to wear an earring or earnings is definitely a sign to other men of a man who wishes to express himself as an individual or just wants some attention. However that indication of individualism is a negative sign, seemingly an expression of some kind of perversion. The person seems different, indeed, either he as a homosexual, pot smoker, criminal pimp, gypsy, child molester, pickpocket -- hide your wallet, they are not to be trusted. This is what other men think. They appear dirty and slimy to most men and one who you could catch a disease from, or one who could violate your family and friends. The normal male wants nothing to do with this type of guy. Ask the men on the street. I bet the first word that comes to mind would be, "freak".

I think it is a sign of insecurity. If you are secure in who you are you don't usually do anything to draw attention to yourself. If you need attention it is a sign of weakness. Jesus, who was totally secure, could not be picked out in a crowd according to the word. When I see them I assume the person has other problems too and sure enough if you get to know them those problems come out pretty fast. I guess it could be the excessive soy consumption which is being researched now.

IN 1972 I pierced my ears, I was 15 years old. I was ridiculed, beat up and avoided like the plague. I grew up in a blue collar town where such things just weren't done. I had to remove them for survival. I'm now 55 and getting them done again this weekend.
HEllo on August 24, 2010:
I still don't know weather to get it pierced or not
Oriental on August 21, 2010:
In Ancient China, any young boy who suffered from weak health would need to wear an earring to bless him to grow up and not to die young. Wearing an earring back then was an indication of his parents wishing for him to live healthily.

In kenya, ppl find it awkward 4 men 2 wear studs, one is considered gay but ppl change with tyms n so do the meaning of studs.i have pierced both ears and i find it appealing
Josh on July 18, 2010:
I wear a diamond stud in both my ears. I like wearing earings, they suit me and I think its cool, yes because its fashionable today, I probably would not wear them if it wasn't fashionable. I think the argument about them being a show of extravagance or pride and showing off doesn't make sense because you could say the same for any fashionable item of clothing thats signifies you as being cool or fashionable, as well as the fact clothing stands out way more than the tiny studs in my ears.

It really says, "look at me!" An are of self-exaltation for men.
gabe on June 14, 2010:
this is very funny. many people believe guys should not have ear piercings. but if they insist people think guys should have 1. i am proud to say i am a guy and i have both my ears pierced and i enjoy them very much and i don't really care wherther it pleases other people or not. people need to be themselves and if earrings makes them feel that much better about themselves DO IT!!! if you decide you don't like it anymore you simply take it out and let it close no regrets!
anyway i have both ears pierced and all the ladys i know think it's a sign of masculince if used right.
KRAMER on June 04, 2010:
Men wore ear rings long before women. Hence,,, PIRATES.

'The President' is obviosuly a very close-minded individual. Who is to say what looks disgusting? That is just one person's opinion, and frankly no men wearing earrings would really give a damn. I, as a man who has piercings, definitely wouldn't. Oh, and I don't want to be a pimp either, Mr. President. Take your judgemental ideas elsewhere please.
Chris on May 02, 2010:
Some men wear it because it completes their looks. It's not for everyone...but the notion that it's a display of someone's character is simply ridiculous. More often than that it's an earring, nothing more. I don't understand why some people can be so judgmental
"The President" who commented above me especially
danxn on April 10, 2010:
I would have to agree with john. Because in this time and age people try to fit into the crowd; go with out notice. Guys who wear earrings are just another way to stand out as a person. And to the people who think men wearing earrings are "not right" where did you get this judgment from? Is it because growing up you don't see much or any men wearing earrings, and only woman wearing them? So you come to the conclusion of men with earrings isn't right?
The President on April 01, 2010:
Men with earrings are garbage. Its disgusting. Stupid. Ridiculous. Especially nowadays with all these wannabe-pimps that, as a matter of fact, are usually dirt poor, smell like shit, and look dirty and scruffy, who wear fake diamond studs to make people think they have money. What a waste. Had I my way I would cut off the ear of every man wearing an earring. Either that or castrate him, so essentially it would not be a man wearing an earring(s) anymore, ha. ha. ha.
thecelt on February 08, 2010:
It is interesting how some guys are more than happy wearing earrings while others will never put a hole in their ear. Of course some guys look good in them while others don't.

The one I remember (from some childhood book I read) that is not mentioned here is that ancient sailors wore an earing as a superstition that they would not drown if they had it on.

Arka : you are quite right.
maven101 : I remember hiring a guy with long hair and spoting an earrings (he was a model and extremely goodlooking) to my Sales Team and my Boss was not happy with my choice and wanted him to cut his hair. I had to convince my boss that he would perform better than all other members in the team and he did too without cutting off his hair.
William : I like mean wearing simple diamond studs.
michelle.dragon99 : Thanks for expressing your Opinion.
Arka on October 19, 2009:
As a 27 yo sporting an earring I have to say getting your ear/s pierced is almost as much of a fashion statement as wearing a white shirt and jeans on a fine morning. You do it to feed the composite body-image that you have. Relegating piercing to the further end of the spectrum as vanity is definitely not done as has been done in some of the comments. It is like bringing people to task for having a predilection for a particular make of clothes/look
Peace.

I'm sorry, but when I was in business, if a guy showed up for a job interview with an earring or a ponytail, his chances of getting hired were slim and none...and slim left town...

Thanks for adding value to this Hub. That i guess is a good reason for wearing ear rings.

It used to be a tradition for British sailors to wear a single gold earring....or so I have always believed. This was to pay for a Christian burial if they died in a foreign land.
Interesting hub. I don't wear an earring, never have, never will.

You are right John. When i first wrote down the points this point was in my mind too. Thanks for the visit and comment.
John Chancellor from Tennessee on August 09, 2009:
I think you left out one of the more important reasons - to rebel. Many men wear earrings to show that they are non-conformist. In our society it is becoming more and more difficult to separate yourself from the masses - to be an individualist. I think earrings and tattoos fall into the same category. People want to be different - to stand out from the crowd.
But the more people that adopt a fad, the less the more the actually conform.
In the end, I think the best way to stand out is to simply be your own unique self. But a lot of people have trouble just being themselves. They are afraid to be totally transparent, therefore they resort to other means to try to stand out.
